This feature filled impact driver from Makita is an absolute dream to use. The TD173DZ is Makita's flagship LXT 18V Impact driver which is made for the Japanese market. Unlike most of the Makita's made for the international market, this one is made in Japan and not in China. Japanese made Makita tools use better quality components and they also often outperform their international counterparts.
Brand new on the TD173DZ is its "all-around" ring LED light. Compared to the previous TD172DZ, this light is 2.5 times brighter and can be switched between 3 levels (Strong/Medium/Weak). This light completely eliminates socket and bit shadows and can be used in "light mode" to turn it into a work light.
The TD173DZ once again sets the bar when it comes to comfort and ease of use. It has a well positioned centre of gravity and as a result it feels extremely well balanced. The body is nice and compact with a length of just 111mm and a width of 81mm, this combined with its no protrusion head design makes it handy in tight areas such as close to floors, walls and ceilings.
The TD173DZ has 4 power settings to match any application with a maximum torque of 180Nm and a maximum no-load speed of 3600rpm. In addition, the TD173DZ also boasts 4 application modes which are optimised for different uses, these are:

Wood mode: uses low speed initially to set the screw and then automatically shifts to maximum rpm to sink the screw.

Bolt mode (forward): instantly screws using the maximum rpm regardless of trigger position

Bolt mode (reverse): automatically stops rotating once the nut is loosened to prevent it from falling

T-mode (1): used for self tapping screws in thin metal, after the screw penetrates, the rotation automatically stops once impact is detected to prevent cam-out

T-mode (2): used for self tapping screws in thick metal, slows down the impacts and rpm as the screw fastens to prevent overtightening, head skipping and cam-out.
To easily swap between these power settings and modes, a hand button can be used to change modes without taking your hand off the trigger. Modes can be changed either sequentially (ie. 1-2-3-4) or a mode can be "registered" which will change to button to swap between the "registered mode" and the last used mode.
Also new to the TD173DZ is the location of the operation panel, which has been moved to the rear for visibility and ease of use. The trigger switch has also been updated to allow for more intuitive speed control and a newly designed bit sleeve reduces bit vibration.
*Please note that this tool has a 13mm chuck as it is designed to fit Japanese bits which have a 13mm shank compared to a 9mm shank on bits sold in Australia. While using an Australian 9mm bit in a 13mm chuck is not an issue and won't impact performance, there will be some back and forth play. Alternatively, Japanese 13mm bits can be found here.
